2012-2013 INSEAD Scholarships

INSEAD Scholarships are the most sought-after source of financial assistance. They are limited in number and there is significant competition for each award. These scholarships are granted under various criteria and essentially there are two basic categories of scholarships:
  • Need-based: demonstrate financial need
  • Non-need based: based on either merit, nationality, gender, professional background, leadership abilities, field of previous studies etc.
For all INSEAD scholarships we require applicants to provide accurate details of their financial situation.

All our scholarship applications are on-line except where mentioned in the scholarship description. To submit an application, first follow the Scholarship Guide below and get yourself registered.

Scholarship Guide

Allocation of scholarships by round

Please note the following important information:
  • The majority of scholarship awards will be allocated to Rounds 1 and 2 candidates.
  • Twenty percent (20%) of the funds will be reserved for Round 3 candidates.
  • Waitlisted candidates are encouraged to apply for scholarships within the deadlines indicated below. Your scholarship applications will be reviewed while you are still on the waitlist.
Scholarship applications for Round 1 candidates should be submitted after applicants receive their final admission decisions, whereas scholarship applications for Rounds 2 and 3 candidates should be submitted at the interview stage of the admission process.

The following scholarships will be available for Round 3 candidates:
  • Need-based scholarships: many of the scholarships in this category will be kept aside for Round 3 applicants.
  • Louis Franck Scholarship for candidates from the UK
  • L’Oreal: candidates must demonstrate a capacity for creativity and innovation through diversity and entrepreneurial activity.
Submitting your applications (registration and deadlines)
To access the scholarship application form on-line, you will first need to register. Upon registering you will receive your personal login ID and password to navigate through the scholarship website. Throughout the period that the on-line application is available, you can modify or withdraw your scholarship applications as you please. You can track the status of your on-line application with the help of your scholarship login ID and password.

Applications must be complete and submitted by midnight Central European Time (GMT +1) on the day of deadline. We regret we cannot accept any scholarship applications after the deadlines as the site will be closed.

Notification of outcome
For the December Class, scholarship decisions for Rounds 1 and 2 will be communicated by e-mail by the end of September/early October and for Round 3 by the end of October. For the July Class, scholarship decisions for Rounds 1 and 2 will be communicated by e-mail by the end of March/early April and for Round 3 by the end of May.

Eligibility Criteria
All scholarships have specific eligibility criteria based on a combination of merit and financial need. Candidates will be judged on the quality of their scholarship essays and the degree to which they meet the eligibility criteria. As a part of the merit criteria, the Committee will consider the academic and professional achievements and merit distinctions received. Please note that neither admissions essays nor GMAT results will be considered as part of the scholarship review process.

The group of need-based scholarships is primarily focused on emerging and developing markets. Therefore, when reviewing these scholarship applications, financial need is the main criterion. Please note that a number of supporting documents will be required for the need-based scholarships. You will find these documents listed under the need-based scholarship description.

For your information:
  • 19% of the 2010 classes received INSEAD scholarships for an average amount of €11,200. INSEAD aims to allocate its scholarships funds across the class. Only occasionally is more than one award given to a student.

Please note that participating universities are required to support the student stipend for the award holder (at the rate set by the UK government). The CSC funds the cost of tuition fees (at overseas rate), return airfares, and other allowances.

Eligibility

Applicants must:

  1. be nationals of (or permanently domiciled in) a developing Commonwealth country, and not currently be living or studying in a developed country (please see the Shared Scholarships prospectus for a list of eligible countries)
  2. hold a first degree at either first or upper second class level
  3. be sufficiently fluent in English to pursue the course
  4. have not previously studied for one year or more in a developed country
  5. be able to confirm in writing that neither they or their families would otherwise be able to pay for the proposed course of study
  6. be willing to confirm that they will return to their home country as soon as their period of study is complete

How to apply

All enquiries should be addressed to the university at which you wish to study and through which you should therefore apply for a Shared Scholarship, not to the CSC. The university will advise you on eligibility issues and how to make an application. There are two options:

Option 1
Most universities will handle advertising and recruitment directly using their own application form, and you should therefore apply to the university direct. Following their closing date for applications, the university will ask those candidates which it selects to complete the CSC’s application form using our Electronic Application System (EAS). Please note that candidates must complete their application via the EAS by 17 May 2012 at the latest, in order to be nominated to the CSC by their host university.

Option 2
Some universities request all of their Shared Scholarship candidates to apply via the CSC’s Electronic Application System (EAS). You will be advised by the institution if this is the case, and should then access the EAS once it is open for Shared Scholarship applications by the end of October 2011. Applications must be submitted in time to meet the university’s own deadline, which will be made clear in the EAS and is listed in the Shared Scholarships prospectus. (Where a university has not specified a closing date, you should contact the institution to ascertain the latest date that applications will accepted).

All institutions are asked to forward their nominations to the CSC no later than 31 May 2013 using the EAS.

DAAD / NRF In-Country Scholarships 2012-2013

As part of the “In-Country Scholarship Programme”, in which more than two dozen African universities and university networks participate and which annually supports some 800 African postgraduates. The programme is co-funded by the German Federal Ministry of Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) and the National Research Foundation (NRF). The scholarship is aimed at university staff development in the first instance, without neglecting other sector demands for academically trained personnel.

The NRF lauds this contribution of the German government as being of invaluable support to its own efforts of significantly increasing the number of post-graduate candidates receiving quality education & training; of contributing significantly to our national efforts of human capital development, especially at our tertiary institutions but also for the public and private sectors; and of tangibly engaging in the South African PhD Project and, thereby, fulfilling one of the key strategic objectives of the NRF VISION 2015.
Target Group
The programme addresses candidates who aim at acquiring a Master’s or doctoral degree. Preference will be given to young South African or permanent resident university staff members or candidates considered for teaching / research staff recruitment either for their own university or any other institution of higher education in South Africa. Staff members should be exempted from teaching for full-time studies. In exceptional cases, a limited extent of teaching obligations may be accepted but has to be motivated in writing to the NRF. The host institution has to document precisely and convincingly the quantity and content of the lecturing duties and their compliance with the prevailing goal of the academic qualification of the candidate. An intrinsic link between the teaching obligations and the content of the degree programme is indispensible.
DAAD and NRF offer up to 100 scholarships (first awards) for Master’s and Doctoral studies in 2011.
Scholarship Details
The scholarships are designed for full-time two-year Master’s courses or three-year doctoral degree studies. Note: the initial award is for one year only. For extensions an annual progress report will have to be completed and submitted to the NRF. Scholarship values are as follows:
Master’s courses: ZAR 40,000.00 p.a.
PhD degree studies: ZAR 65,000.00 p.a. Upgrading students are expected to complete an annual progress report, stating clearly that they have upgraded their studies. Upgrades will be included in the DAAD/NRF Joint In-Country Scholarship Programme. Scholarship holders are not allowed to change to any other DAAD or NRF funding streams during the tenure of the award. However scholarship holders are encouraged to apply on completion of their funding (eg. completion of masters degree and wanting to apply for doctoral funding). Additional funds are not awarded to awardees on this scholarship for research funding, travel grants to conferences except for the short term (2-6 months) research visits to Germany mentioned below.
Short-term research scholarships (2 – 6 months) tenable at a German university
In selected cases, the scholarship-holder may apply for a short-term research fellowship (duration 2-6 months) in Germany where parts of the thesis-related research would significantly gain from this research visit because of required equipment, co-supervision or similar reasons. The applicant will have to present a current invitation by a German professor who is willing to supervise the research during the envisaged stay in Germany, besides a convincing letter of motivation and a clearly defined time schedule for the research stay.
Application forms for these short-term research fellowships and further information can be obtained from:
http://ic.daad.de/johannesburg/scholarships.htm
Eligibility Criteria
Applicants must be South African citizens or hold permanent residence status in South Africa (in the latter case, both certified proof of employment and residency must be provided). Applicants from third countries are eligible only for PhD programmes and under the condition that they are employed at the university where the PhD is to be pursued. Applicants must have obtained an accumulative average of 65% and above to be considered Female candidates and those belonging to historically disadvantaged groups are particularly encouraged to apply An age limit of 36 years at the time of application applies Applicants may come from all those fields of study that have a strong relevance to national development (natural sciences, mathematics, ICT, engineering, agricultural sciences, applied social sciences).
However, the humanities and fine arts are excluded from this programme. Applicants who already hold a qualification for the level of funding they are applying for are not eligible. Scholarships-holders are allowed to hold supplementary bursaries, grants or emoluments with unlimited values. However the scholarship may not be held simultaneously with a bursary/scholarship from any other NRF source or administered source without prior NRF/ DAAD permission. If the applicant does receive supplementary funding during the duration of the scholarship, this will need to be declared to the NRF/ DAAD. Scholarship-holders may not hold full-time salaried employment during the duration of the scholarship. They will be allowed to undertake a maximum of 10 hours of teaching, tutorials, assistance or demonstration duties per week on average.
